Surah Al Baqarah: Virtues and Importance

Surah Al-Baqarah is the second and longest Surah of the Quran. The surah was revealed in Medina, and has 286 verses and 6,201 words.

Surah Al Baqarah: Virtues and Importance

There are many hadiths about the importance and virtues of Surah Al-Baqarah. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) highlighted them with the benefits of Surah in different instances.

1- Protection from black magic

Black magic is a proven thing. In fact, Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) himself was once a target of magicians. However, he nullified the effect of magic through the recitation of various verses from the Qur'an.

The Qur'an contains a collection of verses and short surahs that are to be recited as a protection and antidote from black magic, jinn, witchcraft, sihr, sorcery, evil eye and other harmful things.

To be precise, there are 53 such verses in Quran and ten (10) of these 53 verses are from Surah Al-Baqarah, which shows the importance of this blessed Surah. These 10 verses include the first four verses of Surah al-Baqarah, ayat al-Kursi (ayah 255), verses 256 and 257, and the last three verses of Surah al-Baqarah. (Reference: Sunan ibn Majah mentions this under the comments of hadith number 3549).

2- Surah Al-Baqarah is a glimpse of the Qur'an

The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) said:

"Everything has a hump (or high pinnacle), and the hump of the Qur'an is Surah Al Baqarah. If a person recites it in his house at night, no devil will enter his house for three nights; If you recite it in your house during the day, no evil spirit will enter it for three days. (Tirmizi: 2878)

The above hadith clearly shows the importance of Surah Al-Baqarah as our Prophet Muhammad (SAW) himself said that it is the high point of the Qur'an.

3- Last two verses of Surah

The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) said:

"Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqara in the night, that will be sufficient for him." (Sunan Ibn Majah: 1369)

The last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah are considered sufficient for the night, i.e. if a person is unable to perform Tahajjud in a night, he should recite at least these two verses, because he will get that much mercy. Had Tahajjud been offered, Allah would have done the same. It can also mean that recitation of these two verses for the night is sufficient to ward off any troubles or calamities. (Reference: Tafsir ibn Kathir)

4- Security on the Day of Judgment

Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) said:

"The Qur'an will come, and its people who acted according to it in the world. Surah al-Baqarah and Surah al-Imran will be in front of it. They will come as if they are two colors with light between them, or as if they are two shadowy clouds, or As if they were shadows of rows of birds arguing on behalf of their people (Tirmizi: 2883).

According to this hadith, Surah al-Baqarah and Surah al-Imran, in particular, will argue in favor of a person on the Day of Judgment, defending him and receiving rewards for their recitation. Furthermore, when a person is in dire need of shade on that day, the reward for reciting these two Surahs will include shade in the form of canopy, clouds, or feathers of birds, which will act accordingly.

5- The gift of the night of Isra and Mi'raj

The last verses (285-286) of Surah Baqarah are one of the gifts given to our Prophet (SAW) during the night journey (Isra and Mirah), as is evident from the following hadith:

When the Messenger of Allah (SAW) was taken on a night journey, he (SAW) said:

"I was given three things: five daily prayers, the last verses of Surah al-Baqarah, and whoever dies in my ummah without associating anything with Allah will be forgiven for al-Muqahimat." (Sunan An-Nisai: 452)

Indeed, Surah Al-Baqara is of immense value and great reward for us in this life and the next.
